Grace Church School, Music Room and Tuttle Hall
New York, NY
Established in 1894 with an enrollment of 16 boys, Grace Church School has evolved into an independent elementary day school of over 400 girls and boys drawn from a wide variety of ethnic, economic and religious backgrounds.
The Grace Church School’s Tuttle Hall was converted from a gymnasium into a flexible, multi-use performance hall and event space. At the back of the hall we added an enclosed mezzanine for new kindergarten classrooms, economically achieving two school goals: the creation of a proscenium to frame performances, and the expansion of a currently overcrowded academic floor.
We worked with the Grace Church school board to help turn design materials into fund-raising tools; during the planning phases the school successfully raised money that allowed them to increase the scope of the project. We coordinated the renovation to ensure that Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Bureau of Day Care guidelines and inspector requirements were met or exceeded.
