Questions For A Designer: Laura Martín i Sepúlveda

Com vas decidir embarcar-te en la carrera d’arquitectura? Va haver-hi alguna influència que tingués un paper important en la decisió? 

Va ser una intuïció. Tinc la sensació que arquitectura té la reputació de ser una professió molt visceral, amb aquesta idea de ‘’oh ella estava destinada a ser una arquitecta’’ o ‘’quan era petita...’’ estil d’històries. La meva és més simple – quan vaig haver de prendre la decisió, arquitectura semblava la perfecta combinació dels meus interessos: Matemàtiques i Música. Toco el piano, el violoncel i la guitarra, (la meva mare sempre ha dit que vaig aprendre abans a llegir una partitura als tres anys, que un llibre!)  Crec que Arquitectura és un balanç entre el pensament analític i l’expressió artística. De la mateixa manera que la música provoca emocions i explica històries, arquitectura té el poder de crear narracions sobre l’espai. 

How did you make your way into a career in Architecture? Were there any influences that played a role? 

It was an intuition. I think architecture has the reputation of being very visceral and this idea that “oh she was meant to be an architect” or “when I was a kid” kind of story. However, mine is much simpler– when I had to make the decision in university, Architecture just seemed to be the best combination of my interests: Math and Music. I play the piano, violoncello and the guitar, (my mother always says that I first learned to read sheet music at just three years old, than an actual book!). I found Architecture to be the best option for both math and music because of the balance of analytical thinking and artistic expression. Just as a musical composition evokes emotions and tells a story, architecture has the power to create spatial narratives. 

 

 

Quina és la teva formació i com vas acabar a Marvel? 

Em vaig graduar per l’ETSAB (Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona) l’any 2021, i vaig complementar els meus estudis amb un ERASMUS a la ETH de Zurich. Al final del grau, vaig tornar a Barcelona i vaig cursar el Màster Habilitat en Arquitectura a la ETSAV (Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura del Vallès). 

Fa dos anys, Marvel s’estava plantejant obrir una oficina a Barcelona i van començar a buscar membres per formar l’equip. De fet, va ser l’arquitecte en cap del despatx on treballava, qui em va recomanar a Marvel. La idea de treballar per una firma d’arquitectura Americana, amb plans d’obrir una seu a la meva ciutat i buscar projectes locals, semblava massa bona com per dir que no - ho havia de provar. I aquí estic! El temps vola quan gaudeixes del que fas. 

What is your educational background and how did you find yourself joining Marvel? 

I graduated from ETSAB in 2021, and then I completed my college degree with an exchange at ETH in Zurich. And at the end of that degree, I returned to Barcelona and completed my master's degree in architecture at ETSAV.   

Two years ago, Marvel was considering opening an office in Barcelona and they decided to start looking for team members. It was actually a previous boss who referred me to Marvel. The idea of working for an American architecture firm that had plans to open an office in my city and take on local projects seemed too good to pass up— I had to give it a shot. And here I am! Time flies when you’re having fun. 

 

 

Quin és l’edifici o el lloc que ensenyaries a les persones que visiten Barcelona? Parlant en termes arquitectònics. 

El meu lloc preferit és la biblioteca on tantes hores m’he passat estudiant: ‘’La Biblioteca de les Aigües’’ (Universitat Pompeu Fabra). L’espai interior és aclaparador. No havia de ser una biblioteca, originalment. Es va dissenyar com a dipòsit d’aigua, amb la finalitat de regular el cabal de la cascada del parc de la Ciutadella, així com regar els jardins. Antoni Gaudí va realitzar els càlculs estructurals de tot el dipòsit i els seus elements de suport. I després de cent anys d’usos diferent, avui en dia és una biblioteca.  

La bellesa de l’espai i el buit que s’hi crea... No ho sé, em commou. M’agrada portar-hi gent perquè no tothom ho coneix ni la visita, perquè no saben que existeix. S’ha d'accedir a través d’un laberint de passadissos i entrar dins d’una universitat.  

What is one building or place that you would show people visiting Barcelona? Architecturally speaking. 

My favorite is the library where I used to study a lot: “Les Aigues Library” (UPF). The interior space is overwhelming. It was not even meant to be a library, originally. It was first used as a reservoir of water, with the purpose of regulating the flow of the waterfall in the park of Ciutadella as well as watering their gardens. Antoni Gaudi made the structural calculations of the whole of the reservoir and its support elements. And after one hundred years of different uses, it is now a library. 

It's just about the beauty of the space and the voidness that is there. And I don't know, it just moves me. I enjoy showing it to people because not a lot of people visit this public library because no one really knows it's there. You must access through a maze of corridors and even pass through a university. 

 

 

 

 

En quins projectes estàs treballant actualment? 

Estic treballant a Gowanus Green (Brooklyn) – des de ja fa un any. El projecte rodeja el canal de Gowanus i serà 100% assequible, amb aproximadament 950 nous habitatges i una infraestructura de nous espais verds, accessibles al públic! Estic molt emocionada d’estar treballant en això. Quan vaig visitar l’oficina de Nova York, al setembre, va haver-hi un Fòrum de Disseny on els arquitectes presentaven els seus projectes i, el nostre equip va tenir la oportunitat de presentar la nostra proposta. Va ser molt interessant poder veure l’emplaçament finalment en persona! 

Which projects are you currently working on? 

I'm working on Gowanus Green (Brooklyn) – which has been about a year now. The project borders the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn and will be 100% affordable, with approximately 950 new homes and resilient infrastructure for new publicly accessible green spaces! I am very excited to be working on it. When I visited the New York office in September, there was an Urban Design Forum where the architects presented their work on site and our team had the opportunity to present our proposal as a part of it. It was so great to finally see the site in person! 

 

 

Què t’agrada fer fora de l’horari laboral? Alguna afició o activitat? 

Degut al nostre horari laboral (11 del matí a 20 del vespre), pel matí tinc temps per fer esport però no per gaire més als vespres. Durant els caps de setmana, m’agrada tant les activitats a l’aire lliure com les culturals. Barcelona ofereix molts descomptes per gent jove, per anar a l’òpera o museus, doncs ara mateix estic aficionada a l’òpera! 

A banda de les meves rutines, sempre m’agrada aprendre alguna cosa nova. Em fa sentir viva -  ja sigui cursos de cuina, tast de vins, fer espelmes, etc. Recentment, m’he interessat per la navegació. Vaig estudiar per uns mesos i em vaig examinar del PER, i ara soc patrona de barca! Juntament amb el meu company, hem comprat una barca tradicional petita, un patí català. És molt maco. I sempre que podem, sortim a navegar junts. 

What do you find yourself doing outside of work? Any hobbies or activities? 

With our modified working hours (11am-8pm CET), I typically have time to work out in the morning but not as much evening time. On the weekends, I really enjoy both outdoor and cultural activities. Barcelona offers a lot of discounts for young people to go to the opera and museums, so right now I'm super into the opera!  

Outside of my usual activities, I always love to learn something new. It makes me feel alive—whether it’s cooking classes, wine tasting, candle making, etc. More recently, I became interested in sailing. I ended up studying for months and took the PER exam (Recreational Boat Pattern), and now I’m a boat skipper! Along with my partner, we bought a small, traditional sailboat called ‘’patí català’’. It's beautiful. And whenever we can, we go sailing together. 

 

 

 

Com a professional amb experiència tant a Barcelona com a Nova York, quin consell donaries als arquitectes Espanyols aspirant a treballar en un context internacional? 

L’arquitectura és una forma de llenguatge. Definitivament varia molt depenent de la cultura i l’educació, però crec que tenim les eines per fer arquitectura a qualsevol lloc. És qüestió d’implementar-les d'una altra manera! La perspectiva internacional t’ensenya que no hi ha una única manera de fer arquitectura. 

As a professional with experience in both Barcelona and New York City, what advice would you give to aspiring Spanish architects looking to work in an international context? 

Architecture is a form of language. There is indeed a significant variation in it depending on culture and education, but I believe we have the tools to do architecture anywhere. It's just a matter of implementing them in a different way! The international perspective teaches you that there is not one single way of doing architecture.  

 

 

Com a dona jove i arquitecta treballant en una professió majoritàriament dominada per homes, t’has enfrontat en reptes únics en relació a la bretxa de gènere? Com t’inspiren les dones que treballen i lideren a Marvel? 

M’he trobat en algunes situacions. A Espanya, encara és molt habitual que les empreses estiguin dominades i liderades per homes, cosa que pot reforçar els estereotips al voltant de la professió. Per exemple, una vegada estava fent una visita d’obra a Barcelona, i hi havia un treballador qui de manera immediata va assumir que jo no era arquitecta, però sí que va creure que qui m’acompanyava ho era, un home. És frustrant que no ens veiessin als dos igual, i pots intuir com es qüestiona si les dones som prou tècniques per ser arquitectes, una suposició completament infundada.  

Però després vas a Marvel, o a una oficina on hi ha dones no només portant projectes sinó liderant la pròpia firma, i és genial! Veient això em dona força per seguir en aquesta professió. Sé que tampoc va ser fàcil per elles, per això quan veig a dones com elles, penso ‘’Algun dia seré com elles’’.  

As a young woman working in a male dominated profession, have you faced any unique challenges with gender gaps? How do the women working and leading at Marvel inspire you? 

I've experienced some situations. In Spain, it is still very common for firms to be male dominated which can reinforce stereotypes around the profession. For example, one time I was on site in Barcelona, and there was a construction worker who immediately assumed I wasn’t an architect, and I was just along for the visit with my colleague, a male architect. It was very frustrating that they did not see us both equally, and you can tell that they question if women are technical enough to be architects– which is a completely baseless assumption.  

But then you go to Marvel or an office where there are women not only working but leading projects and have women leaders of the firm– it’s great! Seeing that brings me strength to continue in this profession. And I know that it really wasn't easy for them either, but when I see Marvel women leading projects, I think to myself “I am going to be like that one day”.  

 

 

 

Com veus l'equip de Barcelona creixent en un futur i què creus que pot oferir Marvel a la ciutat de Barcelona? 

Som una oficina formada per arquitectes locals amb talent, i tenim marge per créixer. No només amb arquitectes, sinó també paisatgistes, interioristes i urbanistes. Marvel ofereix la capacitat de gestionar projectes de gran escala i al mateix temps aportar l’atenció i presència d’una empresa local. A més, estem equipats amb experiència BIM, un gran avantatge en projectes grans, sobretot ara, que està guanyant popularitat a tot Europa.  

Després de dos anys en remot, ja estem preparats per col•laborar junts en persona! Durant l’últim any hem estat muntant l'espai i, ara estem preparats per portar projectes a Catalunya, Espanya i arreu d’Europa. Tinc moltes ganes de tenir el primer projecte aquí i, poder treballar colze a colze amb el meu equip local. 

Sé que portarà el seu temps, però tinc grans aspiracions en l’equip de Barcelona!

How do you foresee your team growing in the future and what does Marvel have to offer Barcelona as a city?  

We're a team built with talented local people and have lots of room to grow! Not just growth with architects, but also landscape architects, interior designers and urban planners! Marvel offers the capacity to handle big projects and at the same time bring the attention and presence that a local firm can. Plus, we are all equipped with BIM experience, which is a huge advantage on big projects, especially as it gains popularity across Europe.  

After being remote for two years, we are now able work together collaboratively in person. We have built up and finalized our space over the last year and are ready to support projects in Catalonia, Spain and across Europe. I can’t wait to have the first project here and be able to work side by side with my local team. 

I know it will take some time, but I have high aspirations for the Barcelona team!
