The Studio Museum in Harlem

New York, NY

This transformative design for Studio Museum in Harlem developed a new street identity for this local institution and broadened their audience. The team turned the 125th Street facade into a glowing beacon, turning a derelict lot adjacent into a vibrant public space, and expanding program capabilities. The project engages the street and sidewalk and connects them back to the more private realm of the galleries and courtyard. The museum’s facilities were enhanced with new permanent-collection galleries, an auditorium, a catering facility, a museum shop and support spaces. The renovated facade and entry encourage circulation, tighten security, and bring natural light into below grade spaces. The once-empty lot adjoining the museum has become a popular multi-use space where museum supporters and the neighborhood residents gather for events or simply for some quiet time along a busy street.
